Emma says: 'I would just like to say it has been a huge privilege working with you all over the last couple of years. I have learned so much, you have all made me feel very welcome and I will miss you all. I can’t wait to see how things progress at Dynamic Earth and intend to keep in touch.' 

All of us in ATLAS wish to thank Emma for her sterling work, and wish her all the best in her new role. 

Over to Natalie Walls, who is replacing Emma on ATLAS. Natalie is already familiar with the project as Science Engagement Officer at Dynamic Earth. She says:

'I am very excited to be joining the ATLAS project and carrying on Emma’s amazing work as part of the Work Package 9 team. Along with the rest of the Learning Team at Dynamic Earth, I will be delivering the new Outreach Educational Portfolio throughout the summer at our centre in Edinburgh as well as taking it on the road to remote and rural parts of Scotland. I will also be working closely with Hermione, our Scientific Director, to permanently update our Oceans Gallery showcasing some of the ATLAS case study areas through video footage, touch screen interactive exhibits and the extremely popular ROV simulator.

'This project is especially exciting as it allows me to indulge my love for all things ocean-y! Studying a degree in Zoology sparked a deep interest in ocean ecosystems, even braving the cold Scottish sea to become a PADI Open Water diver. Inspired by my exploration of the Scottish coast, I was lucky enough to be able to lead a research project focussed on my favourite animals – sharks! Numerous soggy notepads and leaky dry suits later, I still find myself with an ever growing fascination with what goes on beneath the surface of our oceans.

'More recently I have been focussed on science communication, working with the public, schools and community groups to convey Dynamic Earth’s mission to inspire and engage people from all backgrounds with earth sciences and the story of our planet. The ATLAS project is a great opportunity to combine my love of the sea with my passion for public engagement to communicate the incredible work that ATLAS scientists are doing and the help people understand the importance of our deep ocean ecosystems.'
