Making environmental data from the ocean surface, water column to the seafloor fully available to stakeholders is a significant challenge, but overcoming this would improve business productivity, stimulate innovations and facilitate policy implementation including the Marine Knowledge 2020 strategy. The integration of different data formats spanning national to small local systems into a coherent portal, the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet), tackles this challenge by making data and products available and downloadable for a given area.

 Meet the Team

Lead: Dr Stéphane Pesant (UniHB)

Stéphane Pesant is a biological oceanographer. Stéphane has a PhD from Laval University, Québec (1999), working on plankton food webs and their associated biogeochemical carbon fluxes. He was scientific advisor for Marine Ecosystem Health and assistant to Jake Rice (stock assessments) at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Ottawa (2000-01); Postdoc at the University of Western Australia, Perth (2002-04); and assistant to the Scientific Director of FP6-NoE-Eur-OCEANS, Villefranche/Mer (2005-09) for which he coordinated data integration in close collaboration with PANGAEA®. Since 2009, he joined MARUM at UniHB and is involved in the integration of scientific data for several European, national and international projects, including SeaDataNet, EMODnet, EuroMarine, EURO-BASIN, CoralFISH, Tara-OCEANS and MicroB3.
